Home of Carl Youngber - Saturday, Aug 13th 2005

Dallas Camera Club Field Trip for August 2005 will be on Saturday, 13 August, to photograph architectural lighting at the home of Carl Youngberg. Carl lives at 309 North Waterview Drive in Richardson, TX 75080. He has installed extensive lighting all around the house and yard. Although the yard is relatively small, it is filled with all sort of fascinating photo opportunities.

We will gather at his house starting at 7:30pm to give everyone a chance to scope the place out before dark. Remember that some of the best images of lighting details are made just before and after sunset, while there is still light in the sky. Be sure to bring your tripod if you have one.

309 North Waterview Drive (Mapsco 16C) is on the west side of Richardson between Beltline Road and Arapaho Road. If one is on North Central Expressway (Hwy 75), take the Beltline Road / Main Street exit in Richardson and drive west on Beltline. There are stoplights at Inge, Floyd, and Waterview. Turn right (north) at Waterview (third light). The house is three blocks from Beltline on the north side of the street.

Alternatively, if one is coming from North Dallas / Addison traveling east on Beltline, there are stoplights in Richardson at Coit, Mimosa, and Waterview. Turn left (north) at Waterview. The house is three blocks from Beltline on the north side of the street.

Trip to Bosque del Apache Dec 3-5th, 2004

This field trip is scheduled for the weekend of December 3 to 5 at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. It is located 18 miles south of Socorro, New Mexico, just off of I-25. The refuge is the 2nd most photographed wildlife site in the U.S., and features thousands of sandhill cranes, snow geese and wild ducks as well as many canada geese, cranes, pheasants, grebes, deer, coyotes, bald eagles and a whole host of other raptors, all in a beautiful mountain setting. The feature is the sunrise fly-aways where thousands of snow geese take off simultaneously from a single location to go to the feeding areas. Access to the birds is excellent, and many opportunities to photograph individual birds can be found. More information can be found by clicking at the link above. Socorro is 70 miles south of Albuquerque on I-25. The trip is about 650 miles from Dallas and takes about 10 to 11 hours of driving.

Weekend at Enchanted Rock & old Fredericksburg Nov 13-14th, 2004

Enchanted Rock is a state natural area. The "rock" is a huge pink granite dome that rises 425' above the ground and covers 840 acres with a beautiful stream that flows by the base. It is particularly photogenic early in the morning and late in the evening and the view from the top is breathtaking. It is located on FM 965 about 18 miles north of Fredericksburg, an old German settlement founded in 1849.
Fredericksburg features lots of antique stores, museums, restored 19th century homes and buildings, scads of B&Bs or furnished cottages and several good restaurants. There is an art festival during that weekend too. Plan to meet the rest of us at Freidhelm's Bavarian Inn, 905 W. Main at 7:00PM Saturday for a great schnitzel dinner. Also of interest is Lost Maples State Park, about 60 miles SW. It boasts one of only two strands of native maple trees in Texas, and they should be spectacular at this time of the year. Fredericksburg is 260 miles from Dallas on I35 and US290.

Bonus Field Trip, Aug 7th 2004

We will be allowed to photograph inside and outside of a really unique home at 309 N. Waterview Drive in Richardson (Mapsco 16C). Jerry Comer found the place while scouting this area for his architectural detail subjects. It has been featured in at least one magazine article. Best quick description is that it is a cross between a small Spanish hacienda and a miniature English manor house. There a lots of things to take photograph of there.

WILDFLOWER WEEKEND, APRIL 17 & 18 2004

The third weekend of April we are driving out to see the beautiful flowering of Texas during spring time. This is the time when you see the bluebonnets and lots of other wildflowers on Texas Highway. We will visit Ennis on Saturday and take the famous 'Paintbrush Loop' of Cleburne, Meridian and Glon Rose on Sunday.

Saturday April 17th: Bluebonnet Trails, Ennis TX

Ennis is located about 25 minutes south of Dallas on I-45.
7:00 to 11:00 - Follow the Bluebonnet trails marked on the map (click on it to show bigger version). You can call Gary to find better locations.
April 17th
11:30 - In honor of Ennis' Czech heritage, we will meet for lunch at Cafe Moravia in Ennis. Cafe Moravia is a recommended, authentic Czech restaurant, located at 219 W. Ennis Ave. (972-875-5515)
1:00 to 5:00 - Side trip. For those who may be interested, there will be a Spring Home Garden Tour in Ennis that afternoon. It is $12.00 per person, self guided and includes three home gardens. Call 888-366-4748 if you are interested.

Sunday April 18th: Cleburne / Glen Rose wildflower loop

Cleburne is located about 45 minutes southwest of Dallas on US 67. Glen Rose is about 20 minutes on beyond Cleburne on US 67.
April 18th
7:00 to 11:00 - Proceed around the loop either south from Cleburne on Hwy 174 (or from Glen Rose on Hwy 144) through Meridian, Iridell and Walnut Springs. The area features numerous stands of purple, coral and red Indian paintbrushes, bluebonnets, thistles, coreopsis and firewheels. There is an excellent location near White Church (follow Hwy 54 and look for the signs. It's about 4 or 5 miles southwest of Glen Rose on the map). It has big stands of bluebonnets and other flowers among clumps of prickly pear cactus. Also on FM 1238 just south of Iredell are quite a few paintbrushes etc and some wild foxglove. The best stands of paintbrush are south of Cleburne, near Rio Vista and beyond.
11:30 - Meet for lunch at the world famous Hammond's B-B-Q in Glen Rose. Gary recommends the brisket and onion rings, but don't order too much because the portions are huge. The tea is served in Mason jars so you know it's good. Hammond's is at 1106 NE Big Bend Trail (Hwy 67) near the junction of Hwy 114 S.
1:00 - Side trip. The square in Glen Rose has numerous boutiques and antique shops. Nearby Dinosaur State Park features hiking, boating and actual dinosaur tracks.

Please call Gary Kelly if you are considering either trip.
