FORMATING DIGITAL IMAGES
     FOR SUBMISSION AS PROJECTED IMAGES

To prepare a digital image for submission, follow these steps.

  1. Open: Open image in Picasa. To save original image, make a duplicate to use for resizing and submittal.

  2. Resize image and select file size: Resize image so that pixel dimensions do not to exceed 1024 pixels in width or 768 pixels in height, ie, the image must fit within a box that is no wider than 1024 and no higher than 768. Vertical portrait format image cannot exceed 768 pixels in height. The final file size must be no larger than 600 KB.

Be aware that images with a vertical orientation must still not exceed 768 pixels in height. Thus, their width will be much less than 1024 pixels. Do not confuse these parameters with preparing to print an image. They are not related.

    1. Under the File drop-down menu, choose Export to Folder or use the Export icon.

    2. For a horizontal image, set Resize to 1024 pixels or less. Make sure the height is no more than 768 pixels. If it is, try 800 or 640. You will have to check in the Properties to see the actual image height (See below). Choose the Image Quality so that the file size is no more than 600 KB. You should be able to use an Image Quality level between 80 and 100. This will be trial and error as there is no direct readout on this dialog box. You will have to check in the Properties to see the actual file size (See below).

    3. For a vertical image, set Resize to 640 pixels or less. (640 is currently the largest available height that is less than 768 pixels.) Choose the Image Quality so that the file size is no more than 600 KB. You should be able to use an Image Quality level of 100. This will be trial and error as there is no direct readout on this dialog box. You will have to check in the Properties to see the actual file size (See below).

  3. Check to ensure your image size and file size meet requirements. Go to Picture > Properties or right click on image and choose Properties to check.

  1. Set Color Space to sRGB: Most unmanaged color systems assume sRGB color space. Picasa is one of these and it will not allow you to change the color space. Since we do not know what system our judges will use to view your images, it is recommended (not required) that you choose sRGB color space as your camera default. This is also the preferred color space when printing from Picasa.

  1. Save: Name and save the image in JPEG (jpg) format. Note: Be careful not to save these changes to your original master image file.

    1. Under the File drop-down menu, choose Save As and select JPEG from the drop-down list.

    2. Enter the file name for the image as follows: Photographer’s initials in caps followed by title of image in lower case and jpg extension. Example -VV starry nights .jpg. It is important to include your initials along with the image title to help us accurately manage the images during judging and presentation. Do not include any more info such as "copy", "ver 1", "July", "Advanced"...

    3. Hit Save.

    4. You may also use File > Rename to rename your file.

  1. Submit: There are two ways to submit images - e-mail or CD. E-mail is preferred. Important - Check your file size and image size to be sure the image you now have is a JPEG file with a file size under 600K and image dimensions that fit within a box that is no larger than 1024 pixels wide and 768 pixels high.

    1. Submitting by e-mail

      1. E-mail images to projected@dallascameraclub.org. Any change in this email address will be announced 1 month prior to submissions in the DCC newsletter or you will be notified by email.

      6. The Projected Image Chairperson will confirm receipt/rejection of e-mail images.
