I am thinking about buying one of Nikon's VR zoom lenses. If anyone out there has bought one recently (within the last year) I would appreciate your honest feedback. Was it worth the price? Did you notice the VR affect (ie, able to shoot at smaller apertures)? What kind of subjects do you use it for (PJ, sports, landscapes, etc). Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

My favorite lens is a 18-200 VR. I use it a lot, it's pretty sharp and it fits so many situations so well.

The VR works much better than I expected actually. I am able to get an addition 3-4 stops handheld. That is, in a situation when I could only shoot 1/100 sec at F5.6, I was able to shoot as low as 1/15 sec.

This morning, I shot this example for you to see. Both are taken at 1/5 second. The sample is at the bottom of this post. Shooting 300mm at 1/5 second is quite unbelievable to me....

Without VR (the VR turned OFF) the picture is unusable; WITH VR, it's quite acceptable. I hope this help a little....

I own 3 Nikon VR lens, the new 105 2.8 macro, the 18-200, and the 70-200 2.8.  The answer to your question is it worth it is YES.  The 70-200 and 105 are some of the sharpest lenses I have ever owned and the VR works grest.  I wouldn"t buy a lenses without VR, espesially a longer lens.  The VR makes long handheld shots possible.  Good Luck.
