and learn how to best leverage the resources of the club to improve your photography.
The objective of the Dallas Camera Club is the mutual entertainment and education of its members in all forms of amateur photographic art. The DCC hosts contests and events including monthly competitions, field trips, training classes for all skill levels, workshops, programs of general interest, an Annual Awards Banquet and an annual competition with the Fort Worth Camera Club. The DCC emphasizes club competition as a learning process. Importance is placed on helping the beginner, or new member, feel at ease, ask questions, learn and participate.

Portal: a door or entrance, especially a grand or imposing one.
I find this definition to be very limited. My working definition is a passage from one place or time to another. This can be literal, such as windows and doors. Or metaphoric, such as a cemetery. Or fanciful, such as transporting to other dimensions.
We will explore various interpretations of portals.

I currently serve as the Webmaster and President for the Dallas Camera Club and Education Director in conjunction with Plano Photography Club where I am Training Chairman,
I am an engineer by education and filled engineering and management positions at Texas Instruments for 32 years until I retired in 2009. I first started photographing in the early 70’s - I was not serious and was not very good. In 2001 when I started contemplating retirement, I decided to find a hobby. Digital photography was just starting, and I combined my long-ago interest in photography with my knowledge of electronics and computers. It proved to be a pretty good match. I applied myself and kept learning and improving my skills.
I joined the Plano Photography Club in 2006 where I have served as Program Chairman, President, and now Training Chairman. Plano stopped having monthly print competitions, so I looked around for a club that valued printing and joined the Dallas Camera Club in 2009. I have made many dear friends in both clubs and value the comradeship, field trips, programs, and sharing my knowledge and experience.
I gravitate toward landscape photography. I like the beauty and variety in the natural world. And most importantly rocks and trees mostly stay in one place and don’t talk back. I dabble in many other photographic genres such as abstracts, conceptual works, close up, still life, wildlife, and birds. I’ll have to work on my patience to improve in wildlife and birds.
I have made many trips to the southwest and west. Some with one of the clubs, some for workshops and some on my own. My favorite field trip is the one I just did. I prefer driving to flying. I have my million + airline miles and don’t enjoy it anymore. Driving gives me the chance to see things I wouldn’t see from the air and allows time for the mind to wander as the miles go by.
Three things keep me really enthused about photography. Teaching and learning keep me sharp and challenged. I am in a print study group with a few outstanding photographers who push me to improve to keep up. Finally, I enter several outside competitions that give me feedback and give me encouragement. People tell me I do too much. I think it feels just about right.

For anyone that has not experienced minor league baseball or has and wants more, you are in for a treat. Minor league ballparks are smaller than those used for major league teams like the Texas Rangers and honestly, way more fun! The Dallas Camera Club has a block of seats along the 3rd base line giving members an excellent opportunity to capture the action up close and personal. The game with the Corpus Christi Hooks begins at 7:05 pm but I suggest getting there at least an hour earlier to be able to scout other shooting locations and photograph the players warming up. Tickets are $31, that gets you a seat and a $10 voucher for the concession stands. Please purchase your tickets using the PayPal link on the DCC website under the Field Trips tab. Contact me, lpetterborg@gmail.com, after you buy your ticket so I can keep a list and if you have any questions. Your longest lens will probably give you the best images of the action, but short focal lengths work well for crowd shots and the post-game fireworks. Tripods will be allowed but not on the grass playing field.

AUGUST FIELD TRIP
WHAT: HAAS MOTO MUSEUM ( Haas Moto Museum)
WHERE: 4301 N. Beltwood Pkwy, Dallas, Texas
WHEN: 10 AM SATURDAY AUGUST 16TH
Well, you asked for it! The August DCC outing will be an indoor event complete with air conditioning and static subjects. The Haas Moto Museum has been mentioned before, most recently by Harry Rumberger, contains 230 classic and custom motorcycles. The collection was amassed by Bobby Haas, who, in addition to being a collector of motorcycles, was an aerial photographer for National Geographic (you can see his story here LEAVING TRACKS). Tickets ($15 for youngsters and $12 for seasoned folks) may be purchased at the door. Plan to be there by 9:45 and we may be able to get in a little early. No tripods or flash please. The museum has also asked that any photos posted to social media be tagged with the name of the museum
For lunch, we will be heading to Rodeo Goat in Addison (Addison - Rodeo Goat | Craft Burgers - Beers - Cocktails). I am looking forward to having a good time without breaking a sweat! Hope to see you there.

Caddo Lake Fall Color

The Dallas Camera Club is going to Caddo Lake this year for its annual Fall Color field trip. It has been almost 10 years since the club last visited Caddo Lake, so many members may not be familiar with the lake. Here is a short introduction. For more details, see the links at the end.
Caddo Lake is one of Texas' few natural lakes. Some say the only one. It is also one of 27 wetlands in the US recognized by Ramsar Convention. Lodging and boat rentals are centered around the tiny town of Uncertain, Texas, population less than 100. Caddo Lake is on the Texas–Louisiana border about 3 hours east of Dallas. It has diverse aquatic plant life and wildlife in a bald cypress swamp with a bottomland hardwood forest. It is home to 190 species of trees and shrubs, 22 species of amphibians, 47 mammal species and more than 220 kinds of birds. Over 40 of the native bird species are endangered.
